The Greenbrier
America's most historic golf resort — four courses including C.B. Macdonald's Old White and a Pete Dye design, in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The Greenbrier has hosted US presidents and PGA Tour events since 1914. At ~$175 USD per round with a stay, it's one of the best-value premier resort experiences in the country. The underground Cold War bunker beneath the resort is a bonus.

MUST-PLAY COURSES
Old White TPC
Former PGA Tour host — A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier
Macdonald & Raynor's strategic masterwork. One of the oldest resort courses in the US. Classic template holes — Redan, Biarritz, Punchbowl.
Pete Dye Course
Most challenging on property. Dye's mountain design with bold bunkering and forced carries.
Greenbrier Course
Raynor's original Greenbrier design, updated by Nicklaus. More forgiving companion to Old White.
Meadows Course
Most accessible of the four. Best for higher handicappers or a relaxed fourth round.
WHAT A TRIP LOOKS LIKE
Arrive White Sulphur Springs
Fly into Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) — 20 minutes from the front door — or drive in from Roanoke. Dinner in the hotel, early night. The elevation and mountain air will hit you tomorrow.
Old White TPC
First round on Macdonald and Raynor's template-hole masterwork, opened in 1914 and still the course that defines the property's identity. Caddies are available and strongly recommended — the green complexes reward local knowledge.
Pete Dye Course
The most challenging design on property, with Dye's signature forced carries and dramatic bunkering adapted to Allegheny mountain topography. Afternoon visit to the underground Cold War bunker — genuinely fascinating for a group.
Greenbrier Course
Seth Raynor's original layout updated by Jack Nicklaus — broader fairways and more forgiving approach angles make it the right midweek reset after two demanding days. Group dinner at The Forum with a bottle from the resort wine cellar.
Meadows Course
Bob Cupp's accessible fourth option is a relaxed round built for pace — it suits higher handicappers in the group or anyone who wants 18 holes without the mental load of Old White. Afternoon at the spa or shooting range.
Old White Rematch & Depart
A second loop on Old White to close the trip — scores almost always improve the second time, and the template holes reveal more with familiarity. Late checkout, depart after lunch.
GROUPS 12+ — Book caddies at least six weeks out for groups of 12 or more — the caddie program is popular and the Greenbrier prioritises resort guests who reserve early. Foursomes work best for pacing across four courses.
